city hall wedding

city hall wedding
One of the things that we do in real life is shoot weddings. Yes, we’re that guy. We actually love being that guy. We’ve gone places, seen things, and made friends we otherwise never would have. And we count ourselves very lucky for all of it.

So today we combined a wedding with some iPhone appsperimentation, and here are the results.

We started with an image that was taken yesterday in San Francisco’s City Hall, which is an incredible place to take pictures, and they’re really great about letting you do what you want, almost wherever you want. The light is beautiful and the architecture is gorgeous.

We shot the wedding and the party afterwards mostly with DSLRs, but we grabbed a couple of iPhone shots to play around with later. (Someday we’d love to do a whole wedding on an iPhone, but for now we mix in just a few.)

On the way home, we swung by the water, because the sky was so pretty and the waves were really sparkly. So of course we took a few pictures there, too.

Although City Hall is a great place to get married, a lot of people like the idea of getting married outdoors, too, so we thought we’d create something that took a little from each.

The base image was taken in the City Hall rotunda, and the overlying image was made at the beach. We used the DXP app to blend exposures, and after a lot of experimentation, we found we liked the “screen” mode best in this situation.

We saved the result, then opened it again with the Plastic Bullet app, ran the image through it a few times, and found a result that enhanced the dreaminess of the picture. Then we saved that result and opened it again with the Filterstorm app, where we converted to black and white, did some tonal adjustments, and did some minor (but helpful) cloning to get a cleaner feel.

Good luck to the couple as they head off into the great wide open.
