We call it #hkinstayay

I started documenting my adventures in Hong Kong on Instagram as a way to share my adventures with friends and family back home. It quickly grew into something else. Something remarkable.

Making friends is easy on IG, and a group of us in Hong Kong decided it would be fun to host a photowalk and Instameet. We decided to call it #hkinstayay and founded it on three guiding principles: 1) have fun 2) meet new people 3) celebrate photography.

12 people showed up for the inaugural Instayay in April. We decided to host a second photowalk in May, and 32 IGers attended. This weekend, Hong Kong Instayay 3 was hatched and 38 Hong Kongers braved thunderstorms followed by oppressive heat to explore the tiny island community of Peng Chau.

There’s something special about sharing your passion with a group of strangers. You find out you’re not strangers at all. Lasting friendships form and a once tiny group of IGers is now a community.

Also, Peng Chau is pretty dope. Here’s what it looks like through my lens.

About Tyson

I'm Tyson, an editor and journalist living and working in Hong Kong. I'm happiest when listening to Spoon, running mountain trails, or just hanging out with my beautiful wife and amazing kids. I'm by no means a professional photographer, but I'm most definitely an Instagram addict. Sometimes I stash cool shit here.

    Hi,
I’m a reporter from Ming Pao. Our newspaper is reporting the news of Facebook’s acquisition of Instagram, which would be published on Wednesday. We would like to ask your opinions about this. Would you think the takeover will have any influence on Instagram? How would you expect Instagram’s future after it integrates with facebook? Would you think that Instagram to a certain extent has become a social network? How often are hkinstayay’s gatherings? We would be grateful if you can make some comments through email or telephone. My telephone number is 2595 3139. Thank you.
    regards,
    Kiu
