Ring Ring!

Ring Ring
A shot of the phone booth at 6th and Market in San Francisco. Run through the wringer using Big Lens, Noir, and a bevy of other apps.

Ring Ring process

I started with a Hipstamatic shot, but considering how heavily edited this is, I probably could have used any old camera app.

I boosted details of the shot using Camera+‘s “Clarity” feature, then ran it through Noir for a heavily vignetted black and white look.

I used PS Express‘s “Noise Reduction” to smooth out the shot and applied a little “Sharpening” as well.

Big Lens is where the photo get’s it’s pop from. I selected the phone booth, part of the ground, and the person walking to stay in sharp focus, leaving everything else to appear out of focus. I created a heavily blurred image as well as a lightly blurred version while leaving the same objects in “focus”.

Then I used Filterstorm to apply parts of the heavily blurred image on top of parts of the lightly blurred image… basically I wanted objects to appear blurrier as they went further back.

About DocPop

It all started with games.. During his daily ride on SF BART, Doctor Popular would constantly drain his new iPhone's battery playing Field Runners, but this app obsession soon spread from games to music. Using apps like Nanoloop and Thumbjam, Doc created an an entire album with his iPhone. He was also one of the first street musicians to perform with an iPad. Now Doc spends most of his spare time creating photography and visual art with his iPhone. Currently he is working on The Daily App Experiment, a year long collection of experimental art, and a book collecting his "appsperiments".
