Foodie SnapPak (a love story)

Foodie Snap Pak shots

Objective Scenes isn’t an app review blog, but I’ve been totally blown away by the newest Hipstamatic combo pack and had to share some of the pictures here. It’s called the Foodie Snap Pak, but honestly I have yet to take any food pictures with it yet… which is surprising considering how many food pics I take a week :)

Most of Hipstamatic combo paks consist of a lens, film, and flash. Of course these are all just different filters, but it can be fun to try different film/lens combinations. The Loftus Lens appears to be a fairly straightforward lens with blurring around the edges to create a “macro” or “tilt shifted” look. It’s a great lens as long as you can remember to keep the focal object near the center of your composition. This of lens works great for portraits.

The DC Film is some of pack is one of Hipstamatics most deliciously subtle films yet. I can’t wait to try it out with some of my other favorite lenses. It seems to be a slightly faded, and slightly browned, filter.. giving a warm tasty glow to your photos.

Playing around with the new Foodie pack from Hipstamatic

Along with the good comes some bad… I’m not sure if it’s the Foodie Pak or the new Hipstamatic update, but my app seems to be suffering from what appears to be severe memory leak issues. The app crashes somewhat frequently, permanently losing any photos being processed. I also get the locked-up “rewinding film” notification after taking just one or two pictures. Yesterday I went through and deleted 2,300 images from my Hipstamatic roll, but the problem persisted. Luckily, this should be something that the Hipstamatic guys will be able to fix in future releases.

One a random sidenote, today is Hipstamatic’s 1st 2ND birthday. Congrats guys!

Using apps like Nanoloop and Thumbjam, Doc created an an entire album with his iPhone. He was also one of the first street musicians to perform with an iPad. Now Doc spends most of his spare time creating photography and visual art with his iPhone. Currently he is working on The Daily App Experiment, a year long collection of experimental art, and a book collecting his "appsperiments".

These are great photos to show off the new pack. And woah? First birthday? I feel like I’ve been using hipstamatic for ever! Sign of a good app, I guess.

Unfortunately it’s the new update. If you can roll back to a previous version (I’m at 226), then those problems will disappear. The same symptoms hit Travis two days ago after updating. Rolling it back solved the problem.

I use Hipstamatic 100% of the time. No way could I deal with those issues…

Nice writeup on the Foodie Snap Pak, Doc! Cool pix, too…
